What is a UKAS Accredited Inspection Body?
BS/EN ISO 17020:2012 is issued by UKAS and sets the international Standard for Technical Competence, Independence and Impartiality of the Inspection Process. UKAS is the only national Accreditation Body recognised by the British Government to assess the competence of organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services. Accreditation is a qualification awarded to Inspection Bodies who can prove through a rigorous external audit that the requirements of the standard are implemented and they have the necessary competence. Accreditation lasts for 4 years and involves 32 audit hours completed by a panel of auditors. The recertification audit requires the Inspection Body to requalify for a new accreditation in all areas of the standard. Inspection services play an important role in providing assurance of the operational safety. The Accreditation ensures that Inspection Bodies are working to international best practice and high standards
Accreditation demonstrates the ability of organisations to perform inspections of products, services, processes, installations and design.
The audit process covers:
Technical Competence of Staff
Appropriateness of Inspection Methods
Use of Suitable Equipment
Safeguards for Impartiality and Confidentiality
Code of Conduct and Safety Processes
Quality Assurance Procedures
Risk Management
